Questions to Ask a Marketing Agency

Before you sign a retainer with anyone — us included — ask these eight questions. Here's how we'd answer each one.

Most bad agency relationships trace back to a question that never got asked before the contract was signed. None of these are trick questions — a good agency should answer all eight without flinching.

01

What exactly is included in the retainer?

Our answer

Get it in writing — deliverables, number of ad variations tested per month, reporting cadence, and what counts as "extra" work. We scope this in the strategy call and put it in writing before you sign anything, precisely so there's no vague "marketing support" line.

02

Who will actually be working on my account?

Our answer

Ask for the name and seniority of the person actually running your campaigns day to day, not just the person who sold you the contract. With us, that's the same person — no handoff to a junior account exec after the sales call ends.

03

How do you report results, and how often?

Our answer

Weekly, in plain English, tied to the metric that actually matters to your business (booked calls, leads, revenue) — not vanity metrics like impressions or reach dressed up as progress.

04

What happens if it's not working after 90 days?

Our answer

You should get a straight answer about what changes, not a longer contract to "give it more time." We review performance against agreed targets and tell you plainly if something isn't working and what we'd do differently — or if it's not the right fit.

05

Do you take a cut of my ad spend?

Our answer

Ask directly — a percentage-of-spend fee can quietly reward an agency for spending more of your budget, not spending it better. We price on a fixed, scoped retainer instead, so our incentive is performance, not spend. See our pricing breakdown for more on this.

06

Can I see examples of past work or case studies?

Our answer

Any agency should be able to show real work, not just logos on a slide. Ask what was actually built and what changed as a result. See what we've built end-to-end for RYGKIT and Toastea.

07

What's the contract length and notice period?

Our answer

A long lock-in contract is often a sign an agency expects you to want to leave. Ask what happens if you want to end the engagement and how much notice is required.

08

Who owns the ad accounts and assets if we part ways?

Our answer

You should own your ad accounts, pixel data, creative files and any code or content built for you — full stop. Confirm this before you sign, not after a difficult conversation about leaving.

If you've asked all eight and you're still interested, that's exactly what a strategy call is for. And if you're still deciding whether now is even the right time to hire, our note on why SMBs delay hiring an agency is worth five minutes first.
